New year resolutions

Last night, I sat on my armchair as I listened to Gary B.B. Coleman on my speakers. The night was cold but my room had its warmth. The clock ticked past midnight, screaming “new year” and the world entered into 2025.

I remembered a friend who made a long list of resolutions during this time, last year. No drinking, no smoking, daily gym, blah blah blah. He got an annual gym subscription too. He lasted nine days, maybe ten. By February, he was the same again. We laughed about it later over cheap coffee. In his own words, his failure was “phenomenal”. “Next year,” he said, but we both knew better.

The truth is people are never content with their current state of life. They crave betterment. They hope a calendar can sort out their mess. But a date doesn’t clean your filth. If you want change, any day is good. You don’t need fireworks or drunken vows. Just take the first step and keep walking. But that’s too hard for most, so they wait. Sometimes, I am no different.

I leaned back and stared at nothing. This time, I didn’t make any promise. It was easier to sit with what was. The clock kept ticking, but I stayed the same.
